Crime Files

Martha Beck & Raymond Fernandez

Martha Beck was a hateful, fat woman with a sincere hatred of other women. Raymond Fernandez was a cruel conman who stole money and valuables from single women. The pair met in 1947, and formed a deadly coupling. When the two first met, Beck was to be one of Fernandez’ many victims when he answered her ad in the local lonely hearts column. But the pair fell in love, and Fernandez confessed his primary intentions.

However Beck was not mad with him, in fact she decided to use this to her own advantage. Fernandez continued as he did before, luring women to take their money. However now he had the hateful woman that was Martha Beck, and the theft soon turned to murder. Things went well with the two, but soon Fernandez started a relationship with a young, attractive woman named Delphine Dowling. Beck was obviously jealous. Beck posed as Fernandez’ sister and moved in with him, Delphine and her 2-year-old daughter.

In time Delphine and her daughter disappeared. Police came to investigate, and discovered a fresh patch on cement in the basement, beneath which the two bodies were found. Both Beck and Fernandez were arrested, and they both proudly confessed to the killings, plus many other murders. Both of them were sentenced to death, and were executed in the electric chair on 8th March 1951.
